These easy German Pancakes are also known as dutch baby pancakes. They are a pan pancake that gets puffy and golden in the oven. I always thought they were complicated to make. Turns out they are super easy to make, we make them as a family.

I am excited to partner with Florida Milk again on this post.  As always opinions are 100% my own.

I was first introduced to a Dutch Baby at a local breakfast spot.  I have enjoyed it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I always assumed it was extremely difficult to make.  Since we are all staying home I figured it was a great time to figure out if I could make it at home.

And to my surprise this dutch baby pancake recipe is so easy.  Even Kurt said these are easier to make than regular pancakes.  I am so excited to share this recipe with you.

    What is a Dutch Baby

A Dutch baby pancake is also called a German pancake, a Bismarck, or a Dutch puff.  It is similar to a large American popover or a large Yorkshire pudding.  We love this recipe because it is so simple to make.  In 5 minutes it is prepped and ready for the oven.   You can enjoy them anytime of the day.  They are perfect to feed a crowd or for your family to enjoy all week.

Everyone in our family likes different toppings on them.  Personally, I like it with powdered sugar, syrup and fresh berries, especially strawberries and blueberries.  B skips the syrup and likes extra powdered sugar and more berries, especially blackberries. Kurt enjoys it with just powdered sugar.

Tips for Making Easy German Pancakes

They work best when you mix all the ingredients in the blender.  If you don't want to have to clean an appliance you can hand mix them, it just takes a little longer.  You can also bake it in a cast iron pan.  When you are ready to bake the dutch baby.  Place it on the middle oven rack so it is not too close to the top heating element.  The pancake will puff up and you don't want to have a mess in your oven.

    Dutch Baby Pancake

    Ingredients

    • 3 eggs
    • ½ cup all purpose flour
    • ½ cup milk
    • 1 Tablespoon sugar
    • pinch teaspoon nutmeg
    • 4 tablespoon butter

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 425ºF.
    • In a 9X13 inch baking dish place the butter and put in the oven while it heats up. This should melt the butter. Remove when it is heated or when the butter has melted. Watch so it does not burn
    • In a blender combine the flour, milk, sugar, nutmeg and eggs. Blend until smooth, this should take about 2 minutes. If you don't have a blender, you can also use a mixing bowl with a stand mixer, hand mixer or whisked by hand.
    • Pour into the baking dish with the melted butter and bake for 20 minutes, until the pancake is puffy and golden. Lower the oven temperature to 300 degrees and bake for 5 minutes longer.
    • Remove from the oven and cut into the pancake. Serve with powdered sugar, berries or syrup.
