School is back in session and I am not sure who is happier. B feels like a different kid. She really missed her friends. We are all getting back to a schedule that seems to work for us. I was really worried about bedtime because the last few months it has been a free for all and B has been going to bed later than I would like to admit. I wanted to share some of the things that are working for us.
Best After School Routine
After School Snacks
I learned quickly years ago that snacks are the key to keeping kids happy. We bring snacks and a drink for pickup. We all know what it feels like to be hangry and a hangry kid is not a happy kid.
When we get home the first thing B does is jump into the shower. With a newborn at home we are trying to keep all the germs away. And it has been a time saver since after dinner B used to procrastinate getting in the shower.
If you have ever forgotten to unpack a lunchbox before you know how important it is to empty backpacks every day. It also helps eliminate forgetting work only to remember about it in the morning on your way out to school.
Setup a place where your kids can do their homework every day. You will want to have all the needed school supplies close by. We have a lot of homework with cutting, pasting and colorings so we make sure to keep scissors, glue and colored pencils right next to our homework station. B has a desk setup in her room, but we generally do homework on the kitchen table so she can get help quickly if needed.
It is important to have some downtime. Sometimes we take a family walk, or play with friends and somedays that downtime is watching TV.
I love to have the entire family involved in the process of planning, buying and making dinner. We always plan a variety of meals so that we have options that take time to cook and other options that can be ready quickly. This week we tried a new meal that we will be adding to our meal rotation: InnovAsian Potstickers, Sweet & Sour Chicken and Vegetable Fried Rice.
We bought all three at our local Publix. Their potstickers are so convenient. They can be a delicious snack option. Or pair them with InnovAsian frozen meals like their entrees (tempura chicken) and sides (rice) for a complete meal. InnovAsian is better than take-out and has incredible flavor. Now is a great time to try the potstickers, check out this Ibotta offer.
After dinner we start the process of doing down for bed which includes reading as a family.
