How to Organize a Linen Closet

Linen closets often become a catch all space for everything.  When linen closets are disorganized it is easy to misplace items.  Take these four steps to organize a linen closet. Thank you to P&G for sponsoring this post.  How to Organize a Linen Closet

Almost 4 years ago I left the corporate world in search for a more flexible career.  Leaving a steady paycheck with me as the breadwinner meant we had to make some serious adjustments in our lifestyle. Having B made it all worth the sacarfice.

How to Save on Groceries and Toiletries

I was a little surprised to see our highest necessary budget item after our home, was groceries.  So, we set out to figure out how to adjust our budget so we could still enjoy the same products we loved while fiting into our new much smaller budgets.

I love a good spreadsheet so, we did a cost comparison across three local stores.  It was an eye opening experience to how much you can save by buying products when they are on sale. When you start shopping sale items you can still shop your favorite brands at your favorite stores and still save money.  We love having so many Publix stores in South Florida.  Their tagline is Shopping is a Pleasure and it is so true.

    Simplify

Last year my word was simplify.  With that process I gave away more things than I thought would actually fit into a home.  I also realized how much money we wasted by not being organized.  Throwing away products that had expired when you are trying to save money is really painful.

So, an additional part of my strategy to save money was to get my house organized.  Being better organized means that when things are on sale I can stock up on them.  Right now is the perfect time to stock up on home products like laundry detergent and toiletries scroll down to see how much money you can save on P&G products from Publix each item as all the details.

Part of simplifying is that I no longer have to spend time running around town.  I can get everything in one stop at Publix with incredible sale prices every week.

How to Organize a Linen Closet

    Step 1  Purge

Pull everything out of the linen closet.  You may be tempted to do a shelf at a time, but I really encourage you to pull everything out so you can reorganize all the shelves.  Once you have everything pulled out wipe down the shelves.

    Step 2 - Sort

Separate everything into three piles: Keep, Give Away and Trash. I recently read that we use 20% of the things we own 80% of the time. I am almost embarrassed to admit that I still had linens from when I was in college.  I also had a bin filled with infant toys.  It is crazy the items that we save.  It is so freeing to get rid of all the items I have been moving with me for over a decade.

Step 3 - Group Items Together  How to Organize a Linen Closet

You will want to group like items together.  Items like sheets and towels are to be folded and placed together on a shelf. When you are grouping things together you can start to determine if you will need any baskets.  Make sure you don't skip ahead and do this before you purge.

The goal is to organize items you will use, not everything you already own.  Items like toiletries work best in a basket so you can easily add more or pull out the ones you need to replace. I also love using magazine containers to hold shampoo, conditioner and body wash.  How to Organize a Linen Closet

For sheets, fold your fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillow cases inside a pillow case.  With this method you no longer need to worry about folding the fitted sheet perfectly.  And when you need to change the sheet you grab a pillow case and you have everything you need.

Step 4 - Label  How to Organize a Linen Closet

I feel like everything should not only have a place, but also have a label. I love labeling everything because then everyone knows where they go. It makes for a super fast cleanup. Keep the labels super simple.  Some items like lines may not need a label since you will always have linens in that spot.

For the linen closet I debated about ordering fancy labels and then I realized all I needed was my computer and double sided tape.  Size 24 font worked perfectly for the labels.  How to Organize a Linen Closet

Step 5 - Restock Items  How to Organize a Linen Closet

Once you have everything organized it is time to stock up on any products you are missing that might be on sale.  Check out all the amazing deals on P&G products at Publix this week.

The closet looks fabulous. We did the same thing, except we used containers we already had. It doesn't look as pretty as yours but it is a lot more functional.

Great tips! I don't have a linen closet (my house is 100 years old so we are lucky to have any storage at all). I have to get real creative!

It is so easy for closets to get out of control. Found the baskets at the Container Store and Emily Ley.
