I am excited to share our Sunshine Party Celebrating Hurricane Matthew leaving South Florida. As a kid and young adult hurricanes were exciting because they normally resulted in Hurricane parties with school and work being canceled. You and your closest friends and family all hunker down with water, food, a grill and lots of drinks. As an adult, mother and homeowner hurricanes have a different focus. When we bought our home the 30+ windows and 7 exterior doors were a huge selling point.
Fast forward to this week and our first time putting up hurricane shutters I was wishing we had less doors and windows. It took us 12+ hours over two days to put up all our hurricane windows. My husband and I have pain in places we did not could hurt. After working until 2am putting up our shutters your body feels like there is no way you can keep pushing it. But, when a storm is approaching you don't have a choice you have to get up and finish the job. Thanks to Advil we were able to manage our pain so that we could finish putting up the shutters. The medicine in Advil is the one doctors recommend most for joint pain. More than the medicine in Tylenol or Aleve.**
SUNSHINE PARTY DETAILS
In South Florida we dodged a bullet We continue to pray for all those affected by the storm and count our blessings Now that the storm is over the thought of taking our shutters down get overwhelming. Since we evacuated to my sister in laws home we thought we should continue our hurricane party with a Post Hurricane Celebration. When you live in the sunshine state you can take the sunshine for granted. After a full day of rain and wind that forces you to stay inside the first thing you want to do when the storm passes is go outside and enjoy the sunshine. Bailey and I knew we wanted to host a Sunshine Party!
A few of my favorite details include:
- Sunshine theme especially the sun plates
- Pumpkin muffins we made during the storm with a recipe from my sister in law.
- Goody bags including water and Advil for everyone

PLACE SETTINGS
We took a vinyl table cloth and cut 1" stripes then cut them into 2 sizes. Then I taped the vinyl pieces to the bottom plate alternating the long and short ones to form the sun below for our Sunshine Party. Finally it was a windy day so I had to tape down the longer pieces. For the silverware I wrapped them in a white napkin and accented it with our yellow polka dot ribbon.
FOOD
We served our left over hurricane supplies including: Lucky Charms since we were so lucky to have the storm pass us by.
Sunshine cookies were made by dipping Oreos into the yellow candy melts.
The pumpkin muffins we made during our hurricane party the night before were a hit. They were made with love by the cousins with Aunt Christy leading the baking with the recipe from my sister in law Lisa in Texas.
We made the Marshmallow Suns with the yellow candy melts. We originally bought the eyes for a Halloween party. I covered the marshmallows in the yellow melts. I knew they were missing something so I added the eyes and mouth. We took a small amounts of the candy melts and rolled them out into small pieces for the rays. Finally we attached them I used a knife to make holes and put the rays into the side of it. These were Bailey's favorite part of the Sunshine Party snacks.
DRINKS
The biggest part of our hurricane supplies was water and lots of it. We wrapped the mini water bottles with our cheerful yellow polka dot ribbon to have the bottles add to our Sunshine Party decor. And we created custom straw flags that welcomed the Sunshine Back.
Our custom straw flags said "Bring on the Sunshine" and "Bye-Bye Matthew."
Our Sunshine Punch was lemonade with fresh lemons.
ACTIVITIES
Our goal was for the parents to be working helping take down the shutters we planned fun activities for the kids to keep them busy. We setup a station for making sunshine necklaces. Download the Make a Sunshine Necklace Sign.
