Our neighbors down the street just got their first ever dog, he is so cute. My parents had a dog before I was born so having a dog has always been a part of my life. It was interesting talking to a first time dog owner and remembering just how overwhelming the responsibility of a dog could feel for a first time dog owner. Our conversation inspired me to share some tips on how to take care of a dog. I hope this post helps for people who are just thinking about getting their first dog or for someone like me who has a child begging for a second dog.
Having a dog is a great joy, but taking care of dogs requires a lot of time and energy. And before getting a dog it is best to know exactly what you will need to do to take care of a dog.
Tips for How to Take Care of a Dog
Exercise
Dogs need exercise everyday! The type and amount will depend on the bread, age of your dog and their energy level. Our last dog got enough exercise by running around in the backyard. While Addison, our current dog need 2-3 walks a day in addition to running around outside all day long. We have recently started taking Addy to the dog beach which has been a great way for her to get exercise that is fun for our entire family.
Grooming
The frequency of grooming will also depend on the breed of the dog. Some articles say that you only need to bath a dog a few times a year. We find that we need to bath Addy every few weeks. Before bathing her we comb her and do a check for any fleas or ticks.
Quality Food
It is important that you feed your dog a high-quality, brand-name dog food like, Purina ONE® True Instinct With Real Turkey & Venison. Purina's high quality ingredients help your dog reach their lifelong potential. With Purina ONE®, you could see visible differences in just 28 days–like strong teeth, vibrant energy, sparkling eyes, and a radiant coat. What differences will you see?

Purina ONE* dry formulas are highly digestible* and promote high nutrient absorption, so more nutrition goes to work inside your dog. (*excluding their healthy weight formulas).
By the third week of the challenge you should be able to see the changes in your dogs eyes, skin and coat. Your dogs eyes could look clearer and more alerts. And their skin and coat will feel even better thanks to the omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins & minerals provided by Purina ONE®.
At the end of the 28-Day Challenge your dogs' teeth should be stronger, their gums, heart and joints healthier. Or when in store you can find Purina ONE® on the aisle with dog food.
It is also very important that you limit "people food." When dogs eat people food it can cause vitamin and mineral imbalances, bone and teeth problems and may cause very picky eating habits and obesity.
Just as important as the food is clean, fresh water throughout the day.
Bed
Make sure you have a comfortable place for your dog to call their bed. It can be a crate or a dog bed. Make sure you wash the bedding often. This is the first dog we have crate trained and I cannot believe how much Addy loves her crate. If I cannot find her in the middle of the day I know she is in her bed. And as soon as we brush our teeth she is generally already in her bed.
ID
We have so many signs around our neighborhood about lots pets. It has been a great reminder of the importance of your dog already having an ID on their collar. Since collars can come off it is ideal to also have an implanted microchip or tattoo, in case your dog is every lost.
Vaccinations and Medicine
Make sure you work with your vet to keep your dog up to date on their vaccinations. They may also make recommendations for a fleas and ticks during the warm seasons.
