Have extra milk that you don’t want to spoil? I am sharing easy ways to freeze milk. And sharing all the tips so you don’t waste any milk.

I am excited to partner with Florida Milk on this post.

I have shared before our love of milk and how we rarely have leftover milk. My post about how to use up leftover milk was so popular that I decided to write a post about how to freeze milk.

Whether you are prepping for a storm or you want to have milk at home after a trip freezing milk is a great option. It is also a great way to save money allowing you to buy larger quantities of milk and extend the shelf life.

    How to Freeze Milk

Milk is so easy to freeze. You can literally freeze it in the jug it comes in. All you need to do is use some of the milk so that there is an inch or two of extra space. The milk will expand as it freezes so you want to ensure that there is room.  This will help prevent the container from popping out.

How to Freeze a Half Gallon of Milk

To freeze a half gallon of milk, first open the container and use ½ cup to a cup of the milk. This will allow the container to have room to expand. Then you can lay the container flat in your freezer.

How to Freeze a Gallon of Milk

To freeze a gallon of milk follow the same steps as the half gallon. If you are able it is best to keep the gallon container standing upright in the freezer.

How to Freeze Small Portions of Milk

If you don’t have space in your freezer or you only have a small amount of milk left you can pour milk into ice cube trays and freeze it there. Simply pour the milk into the ice cube trays about ¾ full and freeze overnight. The cubes are perfect size to put into your kids glasses or I like to use them in an iced coffee.

Can you Freeze Single Serve Milk

You can freeze the single serve milks as well. Just know that the shape will post likely change due to the expanding of the milk in the container.

What does Freezing Milk do to the Taste

When you freeze milk the fat and milk will separate. So make sure you shake it well so that the milk and fat mix back together. It should not change the flavor.

How Long Does Frozen Milk Last

Frozen milk lasts 3-6 months. I like to write the date on the container so I can remember when I first froze it.

    Can you Freeze Cream?

Yes, you can use freeze cream the same way you can freeze milk. Just follow the same steps to freeze it in its container or in ice cube trays.

    How to Thaw Milk

When you are ready to thaw it out simply put it into the fridge or out on the counter. If you thaw in the refrigerator it can take a couple of days for it to fully thaw out. If you leave it at room temperature it can still take a number of hours to thaw. You may want to wrap the container with a paper towel to catch the condensation as it defrosts.

    Best Tips for Freezing Milk

    * You can free milk in its original container. Just make sure you use some of the milk so there is room for the container to expand as it freezes.
    * The container will change shape as the milk expands during the process of freezing it.
    * Milk separates when it is frozen. So make sure to shake it to mix it back when it has thawed.
    * If you only have a small amount of milk left to freeze you can use ice cubes.
    * It may take a day or two to thaw a gallon or half gallon of milk.
    * If you use ice cube trays they will thaw much faster.
    * Once you thaw out the milk use it within 3-5 days.
