Over the summer I officially went on strike, no more laundry. I was overwhelmed by the amount of laundry three people could produce. I was living in a constant state of piles. We had piles everywhere. Pile of whites, pile of dark clothes, pile of towels, pile of bathing suits, pile of B's clothes, pile of clothes that needed extra stain treatment, pile of clothes that were clean, but needed to go in the dryer again and a HUGE pile of clean clothes that needed to be put away. Please tell me I am not alone in this laundry situation.
When my husband ran out of clean undershirts he started doing the laundry. It was a gift, but it came with a price. I no longer had a clean laundry room, the pile of clean clothes continued to grow and grow. We all started doing to the laundry room and picking through the pile to get clean clothes. I promised to come up with a new system.
In January, I had a great system. On Friday, I did all the laundry from start to finish. Since I work from home it was not an issue. It was great because when someone would ask is X shirt clean I could say if you have worn it since Friday then no. And all weekend I had a beautifully clean laundry room. Fall is my busiest time for work and for my personal life and with travel plans almost every week I knew I could not commit to my once a week routine.
So when Emily Ley, one of my favorite bloggers shared her laundry tip I had to give it a try. It is the opposite of my old system. Instead of doing all the laundry on one day, you do a small load everyday. Since I was making big changes I decided I would also try a new detergent. While at Target® I found Persil® ProClean® laundry detergent. They sell a trial size, 10.1oz package for $1.99 so I figured it was worth a shot. It also came with a $2 off coupon for a future purchase.
Since Persil laundry detergent is a stain fighting, whitening, and brightening detergent. Its Pro10 Technology helps remove tough stains for an exceptional clean. It works well for every day laundry and to help fight touch stains. My goal was to eliminate or at least make my extra stain remover needed pile smaller. Persil laundry detergent also has great laundry tips to help with hard to remove stains. Including spot treating the stains right away instead of a week later like I was doing.
A Simple Laundry System
Since the trial size washes 6 loads I told myself I would try the system for 1 week. Every morning I have everyone bring their laundry into the laundry room. Some days I had to collect all the laundry myself. Then I put everything in together. We did not have any new dark clothes, if we did I would probably wash them separately just because my mom has ingrained it in my mind that you should always separate whites and dark. You could also use a color catcher if you are worried.
When everyone left for the day, I washed everything on a quick setting which took just over 30 minutes. By the time I finished reading my emails and my first cup of coffee it was time to move everything to the drier. After it was dry I immediately folded it. Some days I put it away other days I left it on the bed for Kurt and B to help put away. It is amazing how when you have a small load and a laundry room that is clean laundry is not that terrible.
In addition to the one load a day, once a week a do a load of towels and a load of load on the hand wash cycle for bathing suits and princess dresses.
If you do not work from home you could try the same process at night.
