How to Make Ombre Vanilla Iced Coffee
There are three parts to this recipe
- Vanilla simple syrup
- Milk and ice
- Coffee
Vanilla Simple Syrup
I like to make the simple syrup in batches so it is easy to make the coffees quickly. To make a batch you will need
- 1 cup of water
- 1 cup of sugar
- 2 teaspoon of vanilla
Start with making your vanilla syrup. Combine boiling water, sugar and vanilla extract. Set aside. I made mine on the stove top, but you could make it in the microwave too.
If you want to make it for each coffee you can heat the water in a microwave or using a kettle.
- 2 Tablespoons water
- 1 Tablespoon sugar
- ⅛ teaspoon of vanilla
Steps to make Ombre Vanilla Iced Coffee
1. Prep your ingredients
2. Pour vanilla simple syrup into a cup and add ice.
3. Add milk slowly.
Pro tip: Pour the milk and coffee over the back of a spoon to keep them from mixing. If you don't care about the layered presentation you can just pour it in.
4. Add the coffee
5. Serve and then stir before drinking.
Pro tip: adjust the amounts of each layer depending on how strong and sweet you want it to be.
Additional Pro Tips
Do all types of dairy milk work? - Yes any type of dairy milk works. I like to make it with 2% milk, but you could use skim, 1%, 2% or whole milk.
What type of Coffee should I use? - You can use your favorite type of coffee for this drink. Anything from fresh brewed coffee (that is cool), instant coffee (2 teaspoons and ⅓ cup hot water), cold brew or espresso. If you use freshly brewed coffee wait about 15 minutes for it to cool. I put it into the freezer to speed up the cooling process.
Do other sweetener work? - Yes you could get a simple layered effect with honey or maple syrup.
Can I cut down the sugar? -Yes, you can use less sugar for your simple syrup. Just know if you decrease the sugar concentration the milk and syrup make mix as you pour them. Or you can just use less syrup.
Does the order matter? - Yes the sweetest liquid should be the bottom layer. Also make sure to pour very slowly and over the ice so it does not automatically mix.
